Celebrating 80 Years of VegTO

June 25, 2025

A Legacy of Compassion, Community & Change

This year, VegTO—formerly the Toronto Vegetarian Association—is proudly celebrating 80 years of championing plant-based living. Since 1945, when 18 passionate individuals gathered with a shared vision for a more compassionate world, we’ve grown into a vibrant, resilient community that's inspired tens of thousands across Toronto and beyond.

A Movement Eight Decades in the Making

Over the years, VegTO has hosted everything from cozy potlucks to one of North America’s largest plant-based festivals. We’ve supported more than 10,000 local vegan-friendly businesses, reached over a million event attendees, and have had over 65,000 members over the course of 80 years. Through every talk, newsletter, bake-off, Vegan Rock Night, or Veg Food Guide edition, we’ve stayed committed to one mission: making vegan living accessible, joyful, and impactful.

Our newsletter—first printed in 1951—continues to be a trusted source for plant-based news in the GTA. And our membership program not only connects people to discounts at local vegan-friendly businesses, but also helps us grow a supportive network that directly uplifts our community.

The 40th Anniversary of VegTO Fest

Alongside our 80th birthday, 2025 marks another huge milestone: the 40th anniversary of VegTO Fest! This free, family-friendly celebration of all things vegan began as a modest gathering and has grown into a city-wide staple, drawing tens of thousands every year. The festival is more than just a showcase of incredible food and innovative products—it’s an educational, inclusive, and inspiring experience that reflects the heart of Toronto’s plant-based community.

Honouring the Past, Fueling the Future

While we honour the past eight decades of progress, we’re also planting seeds for the future. On July 5th, we’re inviting you to celebrate with us at our 80th Anniversary Movie Day & Fundraiser, featuring a screening of The Lorax, a vegan bake sale, raffle, and family-friendly fun. It’s taking place from 12 - 4pm at the Spadina location of the Centre for Social Innovation (192 Spadina Ave). Grab your ticket here!

Supporting local charities like VegTO creates immediate, meaningful change right in your own community. When you fund organizations rooted in your city, your dollars go directly toward programs, events, and resources that uplift your neighbours, support local businesses, and foster a more inclusive, compassionate culture.
