The 26th Annual Vegetarian Food Fair

Food FairThe clock is ticking down to our annual bash as the 26th Annual Food Fair is just over a month away! This year promises to be a lot of fun with a great line-up of exhibitors, vendors, speakers and chefs coming together to deliver an exciting weekend at North America’s largest vegetarian festival and marketplace!

Featured at this year’s festival will be:

Jonathan Balcombe – Born in England, raised in New Zealand and Canada, and living in the United States since 1987, he has written many scientific papers and lay-articles on animal behavior, humane education, and animal research. A popular speaker, he has given invited presentations on six continents.
Brenda Davis – A co-author of seven books, including bestsellers Becoming Vegan, Becoming Vegetarian and the newly released Becoming Raw and Raw-food Revolution Diet.
Carol Adams – The author of The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory. It’s been called “ground-breaking” and “pioneering”. For years, she has been an advocate and an activist and has been trying to figure out how we transform this world that is built on inequality.
Gene Baur – The co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, Gene grew up in Hollywood, California and worked in television, film and commercials, including some for McDonald’s and other fast food restaurants. Today, he campaigns to raise awareness about the negative consequences of industrialized factory farming and our cheap food system.
Brendan Brazier – A local favourite! Brendan is one of only a few professional athletes in the world whose diet is 100 percent plant-based. He’s a professional Ironman triathlete, bestselling author on performance nutrition, and the creator of an award-winning line of whole food nutritional products called VEGA. In the News

DC Adopts Meatless Mondays

The City Council of the District of Columbia has become the latest municipality to join the Meatless Mondays campaign. They have passed a resolution encouraging city residents to abstain from consuming animal products (that's right, all animal products, not just meat!) on Mondays! Click here to read more about this fantastic achievement!

Farm Animals Gain Another Win in Ohio

Farm Sanctuary has won another successful campaign, this time in Ohio. What was once a state known to have some of the weakest anti-cruelty laws in the US, with no meaningful protections for farm animals, has now passed an agreement that includes a ban on veal crates, a moratorium on permits for new battery cage facilities, a ban on the transport of downed cows and calves for slaughter, as well as legislation establishing felony-level penalties for cock fighters. Read more about this success here.

TVA Member and Chef on Foodnetwork.ca

We're proud to announce that vegetarian chef and TVA member, Sara Harrel, now has her own column on the Food Network's website! Check out her column "Ask a Vegetarian Chef" at foodnetwork.ca. This amazing achievement demonstrates that the benefits of a vegetarian diet really are reaching the mainstream!

Animal Profile of the Month

Care of Bonnie Shulman

 Cow

The Life of a Meat Cow

The August page of the 2010 Farm Sanctuary calendar features two beautiful female cows bred to be butchered. Now rescued from horrible abuse, they are inseparable as they graze peacefully on the rolling hills of upstate New York. Their picture is a snapshot of gentleness. In this case, appearances don’t lie.

The back roads of Ontario’s countryside are great places to stop and see the gentle ways of cattle. Once, a calf came up to the pasture fence and licked my hand. Like most animals, this little baby sought and appreciated human affection. If only humankind would return that love.

Cattle pose no threat to other animals – they are vegetarian! They are full of personality and charm. No wonder then that a young autistic woman living on her aunt’s farm one summer fell head over heels in love with them. Her name is Temple Grandin and she is the subject of an HBO docudrama that aired this year, starring Claire Danes in the title role. It’s a must-see movie. Despite many hardships, Temple earned a PhD and fought the man's world of the cattle industry to create new and humane ways for dealing with cattle and treating them with respect. She has written many books, including “Animals Make us Human”.

Beef cattle are raised for their meat. The world gets its veal, beef, hamburger, and hot dogs from beef cattle. Veal comes from calves and beef comes from older cattle. Humankind also gets leather, glue, and soap from beef cattle.

If you wish to avoid using animal products, in addition to staying away from meat you must choose your clothing and personal grooming products with great care. Luckily, there are many resources on veg.ca to help you select plant-based products for every aspect of your life.

Nutritious Food of the Month

More Than Just Cherry Pie

Care of Amy Symington

Good old July - ‘tis the season for cherry picking by the barrel, so get them while they’re ripe! From the chokecherry to the black cherry to the sour cherry to the wild and crazy cherry, cherries are often overlooked in terms of their versatility and amazing nutritional value. It ain’t just about the sweet cherry pie!

Nutritionally speaking cherries are bursting with antioxidants (particularly the red berry fan favourite anthocyanin), they are rich in fibre, and vitamins - all of which aid in preventing very scary ailments such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. If we’re talking vitamin and mineral content, cherries are blasted full of folate, potassium, iron, and magnesium. Its vitamin A (or beta carotene) content is out of this world high, almost 20 times more than its comrade the blueberry, which is great for maintaining excellent eyesight. The sour cherry is particularly potent with vitamin C and the more face puckering the cherry, the higher the vitamin C content.

Although they are exploding with goodness, remember not to over cook your cherries as vitamins and minerals are lost (particularly vitamin C) the more you heat them. Culinary wise, their uses are as endless as a bottomless pit. From jams to chutneys to coulis, to classic cherry cheesecake, refreshing cherry juice, dried cherry granola, dark chocolate covered cherries and merry cherry muffins, their flexibility is infinite, so enjoy them with everything and anything sweet, sour or savoury. Be adventurous! Cerise, cereza or just plain old cherry, no matter how you say it, they all refer to a deliciously healthy treat, so help yourself (while the picking’s still good) to a big bowl full of cherries and feel jolly about it.

Click here to join TVA and receive the print Lifelines, which offers more nutritional info, recipes and cookbook reviews. Find more nutritional information at veg.ca/nutrition.
