Fast Food Nation
Friday, 09 March 2007

ffnation.jpgFast Food Nation is now out on DVD. It is based on Eric Schlosser's bestselling, non-fiction book. The film's all-star cast includes Kris Kristofferson, Wilmer Valderrama, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and veggie idol, Avril Lavigne.

The New York Times called it "the most important political film from an American director since Michael Moore's 'Fahrenheit 9/11'." Extras include all three of the excellent Meatrix videos and a commentary with Schlosser and director Richard Linklater.

A review at Ethicurian.com says the movie "fails to convey more than soundbites from Eric Schlosser’s dense, compelling exposé [but] the performances are good (Kris Kristofferson in particular), much of the movie is riveting, and the plight of the immigrants being exploited by the meatpacking plant couldn’t be more relevant given the recent raids at Swift & Co (see story at washingtonpost.com). If you haven’t seen “Fast Food Nation” yet, it’s definitely worth renting."

In related news, Eric Schlosser spoke at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Arizona on Tuesday.

"We're part of a huge eating experiment and we've become one of the fattest societies in human history," Schlosser told a packed audience of more than 600 students, faculty and residents.

"One in four of you will get really sick this year because of something you ate. There's sh_t in the meat, and now there's sh_t in the spinach and in the lettuce."

Many of the young listeners vowed to change their eating habits. "Since my dad died last year, my mom has been shopping organic," said Kasey Smith, 18, of Gilbert. She said her father had poor eating habits. "We've had McDonald's only once since he passed away," she said.
